Learn about Billy the Kid in Las Cruces Historic Tours

Billy the Kid

This tour follows Billy the Kid’s trail past his most notorious haunts, one at the Old Mesilla Plaza and the other at Outlaw Rock in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.

Outlaw Rock is in Faulkner Canyon (also known as Stolen Horse Canyon) where Billy and his gang left their mark. Old Mesilla is where Billy escaped from jail on the historic Plaza. Experience Western history and the cultural flair of Old Mesilla along with the natural beauty of Faulkner Canyon in the Robledo Mountains Wilderness.

We will all meet at our office in the Historic Old Dona Ana Courthouse at 251 West Amador at designated times to start the tour. (We do have bathroom facilities at the Courthouse). We will drive over to Old Mesilla, park and walk a short distance over to the Plaza to the old jail building and go over the history of the old Plaza in the days of Billy the Kid and the lively but troubled life of the “Kid”.Our van will pick everyone up at the Plaza where we will head out to Fort Selden to walk through the museum at the fort and how the fort played a part in Billy’s life the days of the old Wild West.

Our van will pick everyone up at the plaza where we will head out to Fort Selden to walk through the museum at the fort and learn how the fort played a part in Billy’s life. We will then load up and drive up to Stolen Horse Canyon to stop at Outlaw Rock, an ancient volcanic “plug”, which from its height, Billy could survey the surrounding areas, looking for a Sheriffs posse or an opportunity such as a passing stagecoach. After a talk at the rock, we will saddle back up and slap leather back to the Dona Ana Courthouse to conclude the tour.
